Rough Summer

Posted by Jessii Aug. 20, 2009 @ 8:09 AM EDT

Ok so my summer was rough but I got a lot out of it, I guess. One of the things that happened to make the summer so rough was that we had a staff member from England go out drinking with another staff member from Wales and one from Texas. They ate dinner, had some wine, and then the shots began or whatever happened. The 3 of them came back drunk but the girl from England almost didn't survive. She was found on the lawn with her face in her own vomit. The RN and one of the lifeguards carried her up to the office porch, the lifeguard ran down and got me, then called the camp director. Camp director called 911 and waited for the ambulance to arrive.

Meanwhile we have the girl on a chair and she's having what we thought were seizures because she'd tense up and then relax, foaming at the mouth, and the way that she was acting was pretty scary. We took turns holding her head and bringing her forward to vomit so that she wouldn't faceplant into the porch and end up with more problems. This went on for what seems like an eternity. The RN went back and forth checking on the girl from Texas.

When they finally got her into the ambulance, the RN went with them. She said the scariest thing was that they couldn't get her to rouse or respond even with pounding on her chest as hard as they did. With an iv in her she started to come around because she was very dehydrated.

At the hospital they stuck tubes up her nose to pump her stomach. Her blood alcohol content was .316, which is the highest that a lot of people have ever heard of. This is what had been absorbed and doesn't include what she threw up.

So who had to clean this mess up? I had some help but did quite a bit of it myself. It wasn't peasant. A lot of us said that we got contact drunk because the smell was so strong. Unfortunately for this girl and the girl from Texas, they were both fired because they couldn't perform their unit duties when they came back on duty.

I'm not against people drinking. But this is one of the reasons why I'm so against binge drinking and people who just have no idea when to stop. We almost lost a friend and family member that night. She's now doing well but if she hadn't been found in time, we would've been having a memorial service and sending her home to her family in a coffin.

So think before you drink. Know what your limit is and when enough is enough.

So says someone who's too young to be drinking.
